NEXT ROUND RETURNS TO WPC24!

The Next Round Brewing Project is a joint venture between Clean Water Professionals of Kentucky and Tennessee (CWP), and local stakeholders in the water industry to educate the public on water reclamation and reuse. For the 2024 Water Professionals Conference (WPC) conference held in Louisville, Kentucky, partners for the project were Louisville MSD, Louisville Water Company, and Hazen and Sawyer (Hazen). In Louisville, water is collected from the Ohio River and treated by the Louisville Water Company (LWC). The water is used by the public and wastewater is then conveyed to one of the Water Reclamation Facilities, operated by Louisville MSD, where it is treated and released into a local waterbody. In this water reuse project, water that would have been released into the Floyds Fork Creek will go through tertiary and advanced treatment processes to meet drinking water standards and then be given to local breweries, Apocalypse, and Holsopple to produce beer in limited batches to be made available to participants at the 2024 WPC. As water stresses continue to grow globally, it is important to educate the public about the challenges and changing relationships communities will face with their water. While Kentucky is a water rich state, some local cities have begun looking at water reuse and how it can be used to better their communities. Beer, made of approximately 90% water, will have different flavor profiles based on the mineral content and quality of the water used. Breweries are therefore an ideal partner to showcase the potential water reuse has with the public.
