Track
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Description
Creating a positive and connected workplace culture doesn’t happen by accident. It requires intentional effort and leadership. For young professionals, becoming a “culture creator” is a powerful way to build community, foster collaboration, and position yourself as a leader within your organization and professional networks. This session will explore practical strategies to bridge generational gaps, create shared experiences, and develop meaningful connections that lead to personal growth and organizational success. You’ll leave with a toolkit to position yourself as a culture creator, opening doors to new connections and opportunities. Key Topics: 1. Intergenerational Communication • Understand the value of diverse perspectives. • Learn techniques to bridge generational gaps and foster mutual respect. 2. Shared Experiences • Organize inclusive events that bring people together. • Include experienced staff in Young Professional (YP) events to bridge the gap and create commonality. 3. Building Connections Through Learning • Invite experienced staff to present on topics for YP groups or the entire office. • Approach subject matter experts with curiosity and collaboration in mind. 4. Leadership Opportunities & Networking • Volunteer for leadership roles in committees or events. • Network intentionally with staff outside your immediate circle to expand influence. Personal Anecdote When I first stepped into engineering consulting right out of college, I felt completely overwhelmed; navigating generational differences, figuring out what “professional” looked like, and trying not to feel out of place. Joining my office’s YP group changed everything. It gave me a community, genuine mentors , and the confidence to get more involved. Eventually becoming our YP Chair wasn’t just a leadership step - it was the moment I realized how powerful it can be to create spaces where people feel connected, supported, and seen. Becoming a culture creator builds community, bridges generational gaps, and elevates your professional presence while positioning yourself for more leadership, collaboration, and career-shaping opportunities.
