In this presentation, Dr. Moore will focus on the following topics that will help POTW Pretreatment staff better understand the wide array of problems that can be caused by industrial process wastewaters and steps that can be taken to alleviate these potential problems.
1. General approach for handling industrial wastes
2. Advantages of joint treatment of industrial and municipal wastewaters
3. Disadvantages of joint treatment of industrial and municipal wastewaters
4. Effects of industrial wastewater on biological processes (with specific examples)
• Problems caused by slug hydraulic loads
• Problems caused by high FOG content
• Problems caused by excessive acidity
• Problems caused by excessive coarse suspended matter
• Problems caused by heavy metals and toxic organics
• Problems caused by slug organic loads
• Problems caused by flammable and explosive substances
• Industrial wastes that often contribute to settleability issues in activated sludge
5. Specific steps that can be taken by the POTW to prevent/solve problems caused by industrial wastewaters
