Description
Water distribution staff is often approached by developers seeking to understand the available water supply capacity at potential locations for new development. This presentation shows how small and large utilities have adopted a new methodology for developing a map which provide the capacity at different locations in the system. These capacity maps are developing using an algorithm which considers available pumping capacity, storage capacity, treatment plant capacity, modeled available flow at allowable pressure set points, maximum velocities constraints and maximum headloss constraints on pipes and ensuring other system design guidelines are met. These maps create a simplified figure that provides a comprehensive overview of the available water supply at locations in the system. This information can be utilized by both technical and non-technical staff to quickly convey available system capacity. Available capacity can also be assigned to each parcel in the district and posted online to be more transparent with developers seeking to understand the potential water supply and available pressures. These capacity maps are also intended to be developed as part of long-term master planning studies, helping to provide a comprehensive overview to understand the impacts of higher demand and impacts new developments can have on the system without additional infrastructure improvements. T= This presentation will also walkthrough examples of how different utilities have used these capacity maps to communicate available capacity to developers and provide some feedback on the pros and cons of each of the different strategies. This presentation will walk through how utilities have developed criteria for establishing available water capacity map of their system to streamline communication with developers.
