Description
As the water industry faces an increasingly urgent workforce shortage, early engagement and mentorship have become critical to sustaining the future of our infrastructure. Contractors play a unique and often underutilized role in this effort. Our hope is to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application while fostering interests in water careers.
This presentation highlights The Walsh Group’s approach to early workforce development through mentorship, hands-on student engagement, and philanthropy. Drawing from real-world experiences with programs such as Archer Western’s participation in the Georgia Model Water Tower Competition and Walsh Construction’s engagement in the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentoring Program, the session will explore how contractor involvement can spark curiosity, build practical understanding, and introduce students to meaningful career pathways in the water and wastewater industry.
Attendees will gain insight into how early exposure to water infrastructure and construction careers supports workforce development initiatives, the value of mentoring middle and high school students, and the role of corporate philanthropy and community partnerships. All of these efforts strengthen the local talent pipeline and engage the next generation.
By sharing success stories, and a few challenges, this presentation aims to inspire utilities, engineers, and contractors to collaborate more intentionally in developing the next generation of water professionals.
