Description
The professional engineer’s creed is clear: “I dedicate my professional knowledge and skill to the advancement and betterment of human welfare.” But does that responsibility begin and end with our technical deliverables? Community engagement and service requirements are increasingly becoming incorporated into water infrastructure planning, design, and delivery. Utilities and public-sector clients are placing greater emphasis on outreach, equity, and community benefit as part of capital programs, regulatory compliance, and public trust initiatives. As a result, water professionals are being asked to contribute beyond traditional technical services. This presentation will examine how we as water professionals can effectively support service and outreach efforts while maintaining professional, contractual, and ethical standards. The session will discuss how to identify appropriate service opportunities, evaluate nonprofit partnerships, and align engineering expertise with community needs in a way that supports utility goals and project success. Drawing on personal experience supporting outreach programs within a large engineering organization, the presentation will provide practical examples and guidance that attendees can apply within their own utilities, consulting firms, or project teams. Emphasis will be placed on approaches that are scalable, measurable, and aligned with client expectations. This presentation will focus on the following: • Current industry trends in service and outreach requirements • Integrating outreach activities into project delivery without increasing risk or scope creep • Aligning service efforts with utility goals, equity initiatives, and public engagement strategies • Evaluating and selecting appropriate community and nonprofit partnerships o Measuring the value and impact of service activities for utilities
