Description
The Jacobson Reservoir in Lexington, KY has seen some things… Originally constructed in 1906 as Reservoir No. 4, Kentucky American Water's Jacobson Reservoir has been serving communities throughout Central Kentucky for 120 years. In that time, the reservoir has gone by many names and two (2) major expansions that increased its capacity from 550 MG to over 800 MG today. This year, KAW and its partners are working to rehabilitate the original outlet works and preserve this piece of Kentucky history for future generations. Improvements will include spot repairs to the tower's original masonry and copper roof as well as replacement the original control valves inside the tower with automated hydraulic gates to improve operation. The existing primary spillway will also be improved with the installation of thirteen (13) rock anchors through the spillway's concrete weir. During construction, the pump station and outlet tower will need to be removed from service which will leaving the Richmond Road WTP without a critical source of supply. In the interim, the Richmond Road WTP will rely on a direct connection to the KY River, per it's normal operating practice, but will also have a temporary, backup pumping system installed at JRES to provide water in the event of an emergency. The historical legacy of the tower, the regional significance of the reservoir, and the unique challenges of maintaining supply during construction all make for a fascinating and one-of-a-kind project that will allow this source to continue serving Central Kentucky for another 100+ years.
