Unlocking Efficiency in Utility Asset Management

Asset Management
Description
Water and wastewater utilities increasingly rely on GIS-based work order management systems to maintain visibility and control over complex networks of horizontal assets. Yet, managing vertical assets - such as treatment facilities, pump stations, and other plant infrastructure - remains a persistent challenge. Traditional GIS-centric workflows often lack the flexibility needed to connect disparate data sources, resulting in inefficiencies, data silos, and missed opportunities for operational insight. This presentation highlights two case studies that demonstrate how utilities are overcoming these challenges through practical integrations that enhance the value of their existing GIS and work order management systems. In one example, a textual asset search tool - developed to work through APIs - enabled staff to quickly locate and manage assets across multiple systems, dramatically reducing time spent navigating complex datasets. In another, a suite of targeted platform integrations streamlined asset data exchange, improved reporting, and created measurable efficiency gains for field and office staff alike. Attendees will learn how these solutions were implemented within active utility environments, the benefits realized, and the lessons learned along the way. Together, these examples illustrate a clear path forward for utilities seeking to bridge data systems, unlock hidden efficiencies, and strengthen asset management practices - without replacing their core GIS investments.
