How to Get More Flow (NWUD Mowbray Mountain Water Storage)

Modeling/Planning
Description
Croy worked with North West Utility District (NWUD) to complete a 5-year capital improvement plan (CIP) in 2021. The CIP identified that a major source of failure in the NWUD system was water supply on Mowbray Mountain, and two additional tanks were most likely needed to provide the correct amount of storage. In 2023, Croy completed a water model of the mountain. A further dive into the hydraulics revealed that while storage on the mountain would be helpful, water outages were mostly happening from water main breaks, draining the tanks, and not being able to refill in an appropriate timeframe. Reviewing the single booster pump station that fed the mountain and the 40,000 linear feet of 6-inch diameter water line, Croy reevaluated the project needs.
With ARPA funding, Croy worked with both Sequatchie County and Bledsoe County to help support the needs of the project by replacing almost 20,000 linear feet of 6-inch diameter water main with 8-inch diameter water main. This ultimately reduced headlosses in the pipe and allowed more flow to the existing tanks. The replacement of pipes also provided redundancy in the system for isolation when breaks occurred.
