Description

This presentation explores the impacts of historical flooding on Newport Utilities’ water and sewer infrastructure and their people, focusing on immediate disruptions, recovery efforts, and post-disaster assistance. The flood that occurred on September 27, 2024 overwhelmed and damaged infrastructure, disrupted service delivery, and presented significant challenges in maintaining water quality, supply, and sewage management. The presentation will examine how the flood affected utility systems, from contamination of water sources to the damage of critical infrastructure. Additionally, we will highlight the recovery process, including emergency response strategies, damage assessment, and the restoration of essential services. Post-disaster assistance, such as government funding, community support, and long-term resilience planning, will also be discussed. The goal of this presentation is to provide utility operators, decision makers, and emergency planners with an understanding of how a flood can disrupt water and sewer systems, as well as our story and lessons learned on recovery and future risk mitigation and planning.
