Biosolids
Description
The City of Franklin recently reached substantial completion of a new thermal hydrolysis and anaerobic digestion biosolids treatment facility. This facility consists of pre-dewatering, thermal hydrolysis, anaerobic digestion, combined heat and power, and post-dewatering processes. The facility is a significant improvement over the City’s prior biosolids handling equipment, and initially presented several challenges regarding operations, maintenance, and optimization of the facility. The new facility provides a higher quality biosolid than the previous equipment allowed, producing a Class A biosolid. The increase in biosolid quality, the new state-of-the-art processes and equipment, and the operations, maintenance, and learning involved presented a variety of challenges. This presentation provides a narrative regarding the lessons learned from a year of operating the thermal hydrolysis plant at the City of Franklin, TN. These lessons include potential design changes, operational improvements, maintenance issues, and training for employees. This presentation is planned for 30 minutes (20-25 minutes with reserved time for Q&A).
