Description
Workforce challenges in the water and wastewater industries are known firsthand by utility operators and managers, or anecdotally by those working alongside these utilities. However, very little of this information has been formally collected and documented, making it more difficult for legislators, government officials, and the larger polity to understand the workforce challenges and affect change. To address this issue, the Tennessee Water Resources Research Center partnered with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Fleming Training Center to conduct a survey of Tennessee’s water and wastewater utilities. The purpose of the survey was to solicit the perspectives of operators and utility managers on current workforce and operational challenges based on their experience. The survey, which consisted of approximately 45 questions, was distributed online and was open from April 1, 2024, through May 20, 2024. Almost 800 responses were received – 556 responses from utility operators and 236 responses from utility managers. This presentation will summarize the survey results and highlight key takeaways regarding workforce and operational challenges for Tennessee’s water and wastewater utilities.
