Description
Background
Wesley Center WRF in Wesley Chapel, FL faced significant challenges due to high sulfide loading in their wastewater, which averaged 16 mg/L and H2S levels that averaged 708 ppm with peaks exceeding 1,100 ppm at the headworks. These elevated sulfide levels led to the deterioration of the headwork structure and processing equipment, increased health risks for employees, and generated serious odor complaints from nearby I-75 motorists.
Multiple technologies were evaluated to address these issues before selecting a solution.
Project Success Defined As:
1.Keeping H2S air levels at Headworks averaging below 10 ppm.
2.Reduce sulfide loading to averages below 2 mg/L in wastewater.
3.Eliminate odor complaints.
Solution
The chosen approach involved injecting the STX Process before the Headworks to reduce sulfide levels creating odor and corrosion challenges as well as retrofitting the existing chemical scrubber with Evergreen to reduce H2S levels.
Results
Implementing the STX Process resulted in a 99% reduction in average H2S air levels and a 94% decrease in sulfide loading at the headworks. Additionally, retrofitting the existing chemical scrubber with Evergreen increased its efficiency in removing H2S and reduced annual chemical costs by 52%.
Summary
The combined implementation of The STX Process and Evergreen retrofit will extend the lifespan of the headworks structure and equipment, reduce health and safety risks for employees, and eliminate all odor complaints previously experienced by Wesley Center WRF.
